Position Summary
Applications are invited for ICU registrars at Frankston Hospital for 2019. Frankston Hospital is an Acute Care Hospital of Peninsula Health, on the Mornington Peninsula. The Peninsula is renowned for its great natural beauty and with the newly completed road system. Frankston is 40 minutes drive from the Melbourne CBD.

Preference will be given to advanced trainees registered with the College of Intensive Care Medicine. Frankston Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a 13-bed level III facility, affiliated with both Monash and Deakin Universities. The unit is staffed by 5 intensivists, all Fellows of the College of Intensive Care Medicine and is accredited as a C12 unit by the College. There are 11 junior doctors and most are registered with the College as advanced trainees.

Frankston Hospital ICU is a high acuity ICU with a broad general case mix, excluding cardiac and neurosurgery. For registrars who require clinical anaesthesia as part of their CICM training, opportunities exist to offer two semester rotations in anaesthesia over a two year period. Trainees will gain wide range of experience in clinical adult intensive care Medicine. Training will be provided in a broad range of techniques and therapies including mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, fibreoptic bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, echocardiography and basic ultrasound imaging.

Our educational program is comprehensive and structured to assist our trainees in writing their Fellowship exam. The educational program is adapted to meet training requirements at both junior and senior level. We provide a protected weekly teaching program that encompasses a wide range of educational activities including all aspects of intensive care medicine, a journal club and quality improvement activities. The unit is an active participant in multicentre national and international studies. Moreover, original research is undertaken and successful applicants have an opportunity to conduct their formal project during their employment with us. The Unit has a Director of Research, established data base and two research co coordinators and involvement in research is encouraged and supported.

We have an established service in transthoracic echocardiography and critical care ultrasound with an experienced cardiac sonographer for training in critical care echocardiography. We have dedicated ultrasound equipment with a vascular and an abdominal probe and offer hands-on bedside echocardiography training as well as classroom based teaching. The majority of our intensivists have a post-graduate Diploma of Perioperative and Critical Care Echocardiography.

Our intensive care unit provides a highly stimulating environment, with consistent support supplemented by educational and research opportunities.
