Position Summary

The Acute Pain Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) is a key member of the Acute Pain Service (APS), who co-ordinates the acute pain service (APS) and undertakes collaborative clinical rounds with anaesthetic registrars and consultants. The APS provides specialised management of acute pain for patients who have undergone elective or emergency surgery; also for patients who are referred via ED for trauma conditions, or who are referred by other specialty units within the hospital.

In addition to pain rounds, a significant proportion of the acute pain CNC role is liaison with all members of the health care team, including education and resource provision for nursing, medical and allied health staff. The acute pain CNC is also involved in research activities within the anaesthetic department and undertakes quality activities for the APS.

Key Responsibilities

• Co-ordinates collaborative pain rounds - facilitates and maintains patient focused environment that ensures patient care outcomes are of the highest standard
• Liaises with all members of the clinical team to achieve optimal patient care goals
• Maintain APS patient list, both electronically on Cerner and in APS folder
• Auditing / data entry of APS statistics
• Collection and submission of clinical indicators to the ACHS
• Co-ordinate and facilitate the epidural accreditation process for nursing staff working in applicable clinical areas
• Facilitates staff development about pain management principles and practices
• Maintain the fleet of pain management pumps / troubleshoot issues
• Undertake research / quality activities within the anaesthetic department
• Participates in hospital and department committees as required
• Maintains and updates own clinical knowledge and expertise

Essential Criteria

• Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration
• Extensive clinical experience
• Post graduate qualifications (peri-operative/criticial care/pain)
• Strong leadership skills and experience
• Demonstrated knowledge in the clinical area of treating patients with acute pain
• Ability to provide high level of written communications
• Ability to confidently convey ideas and information using clear and concise language
• Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills in the multidisciplinary context
• Demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member
• Evidence of quality projects based on recent research and best practice
• Experience in the education of staff and patients
• Ability to be innovative, resourceful and adaptable to change
