Position Summary

The Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) is a valued member of the leadership team at Peninsula Health, committed to upholding Peninsula Health’s values and meeting organisational goals.
The NUM is instrumental in the planning process and the effective allocation of resources for the ward/unit. They are responsible for leading and managing a diverse team ensuring that their staff deliver safe, evidence based, person centred care to achieve optimal health outcomes or a dignified death.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the provision of psychiatric/mental health nursing services in a ward to enable the effective utilisation of available resources to achieve ward and facility objectives.
• Provide the highest level of “hands-on” clinical practice and advice and participate in the delivery of care.
• Participate in the development of psychiatric/mental health nursing policy and procedures relating to the ward and the facility as a whole.
• Manage the provision of all nursing and non-nursing services to the ward.
• Co-ordinate the provision of mental health professional services to clients.
• Maintain standards of professional psychiatric/mental health nursing care and promote the training and professional development of all nursing staff on the ward.
• Ensure that the relevant provisions of the Mental Health Act 2014 (Vic) are followed.
• Monitor and evaluate ward program activities and outcomes and report as required to the facility’s nursing executive on progress towards objectives, resourcing difficulties, staff training requirements, emerging clinical issues that may be addressed across a number of wards, etc. Develop and manage change as appropriate.
• Supervise maintenance of client records by ensuring that ward staff complete all necessary paperwork.
• Ensure that staffing rosters and staff deployment are organised to achieve effective program delivery and efficient use of staff resources.
• Lead and manage the team to achieve high quality clinical care in accordance with evidence based practice standards and Peninsula Health Values
• Ensure the safety of the public, patients and staff in relation to the provision of relevant Acts (OH&S, & Infection Control) and Peninsula Health Policies.
• Ensure all administrative functions are completed including the management of resources within the Unit/Department.
• Promote a culture of continuous service improvement within the Unit/Department by monitoring standards of service and practice.
• Ensure all staff have completed mandatory training and have active performance development plans

Essential Criteria

• Registered Nurse with current NMBA registration
• Professional nursing qualification including post graduate qualification in mental health or specialist undergraduate psychiatric/mental health nursing program.
• Prepares written documentation using clear, concise and grammatically correct language.
• Clearly and confidently communicates with key contacts and welcomes constructive feedback.
• Polite and considerate in dealing with others.
• Accepts responsibilities for own actions.
• Supports individuals and the team, delegating responsibilities appropriately.
• Understands the issues and pressures to which the organisation has to respond.
• Seeks all relevant information for problem solving.
• Identifies and supports where necessary the need for change
• Uses a range of software application features for word processing, spread sheets etc.
