Position Summary

SHARPS (Southern HEP/HIV/AIDS Resource & Prevention Service) has been established in Frankston since March 1991. The program provides a fixed based (shop front) Needle & Syringe Program (NSP). It also provides a Mobile Outreach NSP service which covers the area of Frankston, Springvale and Dandenong.
The SHARPS NSP Worker’s key role is the provision of Harm Reduction services including distributing sterile needle and syringes. The NSP Worker also provides health information particularly relating to safer injecting of illicit drugs. The Worker will also assist in the referral to other services such as Drug and Alcohol, GPs, housing, health services and have the ability to empathise with current injecting drug users.

Key Responsibilities

- Under the direction of the Team Leader, and as part of a team, provide a
Needle & Syringe Program.
- Participate in promotional activities relating to harm reduction drug use and health promotion.
- Offer referrals (upon request of the client) to specific drug and alcohol, welfare, legal and health services.
- Liaise with relevant services with in the catchment area relating to health and welfare

Essential Criteria

- Current Drivers Licence
- Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of Harm Reduction and its applicability to IDUs
- Knowledge of relevant service provider groups
- Effectively liaise with relevant service providers
- Communicates well with, relates to and sees issues from the perspective of, people from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds
- Remains calm and in control under pressure

Selection Criteria Desirable: Have a commitment and understanding of Harm Reduction as it relates to injecting drug users. Ability to work effectively with marginalised individuals and advocate on there behalf.
