Position Summary

Peninsula Health Oncology Unit in Frankston serves a catchment population of about 300,000 and is part of the Southern Melbourne Integrated Cancer Services (SMICS). The Oncology Unit is staffed by the Head of Unit and a full time consultant with eight visiting consultant medical oncologists.

This medical oncology advanced physician trainee (APT) position constitutes a 12-month non-accredited training. This is an additional position to the current 12-month RACP-accredited Medical Oncology APT position. We work closely with the radiation oncologists, palliative care physicians and haematologists. The non-accredited medical oncology APT will attend the oncology outpatient clinics under direct supervision by consultants, the oncology inpatient service, inpatient consultations, chemotherapy day units within Frankston and Rosebud Hospitals and review of the oncology patients presenting to the Emergency Department as required.

This position is currently supported by a basic physician trainee medical registrar (BPT) and a resident in addition to an existing accredited Medical Oncology APT position. The wide array of oncology cases presenting to the clinic, ward and ED will provide excellent exposure and learning opportunities.

There are regular teaching sessions on various oncology topics by consultants, monthly research meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings, grand rounds, journal clubs and post-clinic discussions. The APT will attend multi-disciplinary team meetings of the various tumour streams, weekly unit and ward meetings as well as grand rounds. There will be ample opportunities to engage in research projects within the unit in addition to running clinical trials under direct supervision.
Being a member institution of Monash Partners Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (MPCCC) and a close relationship with the Peninsula Clinical School of Monash University, the APT will be actively involved in both research and teaching.
