Alcohol and Other Drug Peer Support Worker

Position Summary
Peer support is based on the concept that people who have had a lived experience of AOD use and have experienced recovery, can act as 'recovery coaches' (peers) to others and can intentionally engender hope simply by role modeling recovery in a way that others without experience of AOD use can. The purpose of this position is to provide individualised support with the goal of recovery, encouraging self-awareness about what works for the person, and developing understanding and support by becoming part of the community. Peer support necessitates the development of strong, supportive relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.
Key Responsibilities
* Bring a consumer perspective to staff education and development, on issues such as consumer experiences in the community and what consumers mean by personal recovery * Promote consumer perspectives on how services operate * Provide personal help and mentoring options for consumers * Provide follow up support for clients recently discharged from hospital * Document interactions with clients in their client record
Essential Criteria
* Relevant skills and knowledge acquired through lived experience of AOD use * Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and groups from broad backgrounds * Demonstrated team work skills * An understanding of the Vic AOD treatment system * Understanding of the concepts of recovery * Demonstrated understanding of peer support work * Commitment to working with service providers to improve service to consumers * Well developed communication and inter-personal skills
